Mt Cook Walk

I hate the cold. Ice. Snow. Shivering. Hate it all. So I decided to stop off at the start of a popular track that takes you to a lake at the bottom of Mt Cook.

Mt Cook is a stunningly beautiful snow capped mountain in the South Island of New Zealand. There are alpine lakes at the base that have water that looks like it’s come straight out of a painting. You can also buy alpine salmon — from these lakes. And they’re supposed to be yum. I assume. I’m a cheap backpacker and only drooled at the signs while I ate my hummus and lettuce sandwich.

I parked my car in the carpark with the 50 other cars, applied my sunblock and took my hungry self to the start of the track.

The walk began with a pleasant bush walk to shade me from the sun. I didn’t see a single human being the first hundred metres of the walk. Then I stepped onto a boardwalk that guided me past hundreds of people — big and small — towards a lake filled with iceburgs. In. The. Middle. Of. Summer. I couldn’t believe it. I just had to stare at it. And of course I put my hand in the water, not too bad, for 1 second.

Then I turned around and made my way back to the car and onwards on my journey.

9/10.
